A study by the Pew Research Center shows that the number of individuals 65+ who use social media has more than tripled since 2010. 35% of all those 65 and older report using social media, compared with just 2% in 2005.

Why? In an age where families and friends are often separated by time and distance, social media such as Facebook is a good way to stay connected—or forge new connections with old friends. 70% of adult users visit social media sites to connect with friends and family.(1)

This connectedness can have benefits, too. Other studies have shown that social relationships are key to keeping us sharp mentally, physically, and emotionally. Companionship lowers stress, the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s, and improves our health overall. Joining a site such as Facebook can allow us to enjoy all the benefits of belonging to an active social network even when we can’t leave home.

So log on.
