The major symptoms of dementia include memory loss and cognitive decline. However, these symptoms can appear in other disorders that are much more treatable than Alzheimer’s or other dementias. Below some of these disorders and their dementia-like symptoms are outlined.

• Depression: Depression is commonly associated with dementia, but, depression can also cause issues with memory and cognition on its own.

• Vitamin B12 deficiency: A lack of vitamin B12 can lead to issues with cognition. Confusion and memory issues are not uncommon.

• Urinary tract infections (UTI): The bacteria from UTIs can cause symptoms such as confusion, mood swings, trouble with paying attention, and, in extreme cases, hallucinations. UTIs tend to cause these issues more often in older adults.

• Lyme disease: This disease, if it stays around long enough, can cause damage to the nervous system. This can lead to dementia-like symptoms.

• Toxic reactions to medications: Certain medications can lead to issues with mental capabilities, especially if one is taking multiple medications.

There are other diseases that can cause issues with cognition, but these are some of the more common ones. If you feel like you are having issues with cognitive decline and memory loss, please contact your primary medical professional. He or she will be able to help determine if your issues are related to dementia.
