Halloween is right around the corner. It’s important to keep our loved ones with dementia in on the fun. However, there are unique problems Halloween can present to them. Because of this, it’s important to take precautions to keep them, and everyone else, safe on Halloween.

Here are some tips for Halloween safety:

  • Keep decorations cute rather than scary: This one requires you to know what your loved one can handle. Halloween decorations such as skeletons and vampires may be upsetting to people with dementia. The same goes for decorations that make noise or move in response to movement. Stick with fall-themed decorations such as pumpkins and leaves. Also, make sure decorations do not present fall hazards.
  • Make sure they have company: Halloween can be fun, but it is also a night that presents unique opportunities for pranksters and, potentially, criminals. Have someone accompany them so they don’t get taken advantage of.
  • Don’t be afraid to discourage visitors: If your loved ones cannot handle the coming and going of trick-or-treaters, don’t encourage them to come in. You can leave your porch light off to signal that you are not participating. You could also leave a bowl of candy outside with a note to just take one or two pieces.
  • Create new, fun traditions: Try to keep your loved ones occupied. You can create new traditions such as watching fun movies, reminiscing about past holidays, or crafts.

With planning and preparation, Halloween can be fun for caregivers and their loved ones.
