Long Term Care Insurance is additional coverage that most health insurance policies do not cover. This coverage may cover some of the activities of daily living (ADL) that you may need assistance with like
- Bathing
- Dressing
- Eating
- Toileting
- Incontinence
- Transferring to and from a wheelchair
When should you buy Long Term Care Insurance?
The decision to buy Long Term Care Insurance is very individual. Some things to consider before opting into a policy is your family history, your financial situation, your health and your age. The younger you are and healthier you are when you purchase this policy, the less it will cost you. If you are between 50 and 60, and in relatively good health, this is the best time to consider purchasing a Long Term Care policy.
The Elimination Period
Most policies have an elimination period of 30, 60 or 90 days. During the elimination period, you will have to cover your Long Term Care out of pocket. Generally speaking, if your doctor documents your need for Long Term Care and you’ve had covered costs during the elimination period, Long Term Care Insurance will cover a daily amount for your care either at home, a nursing home, assisted living or adult day care, until your maximum benefit is reached.
