As we age, our bodies begin to undergo certain changes. Don’t let them get you down, though. What some people see as negative changes also come with their silver linings. Below we’ll go over some of the changes that come with getting older and discuss how some of them are advantageous.
Skin: In general, skin gets drier with age. At first, this may not sound great, and it can lead to fine lines, but it also lessens acne. The number of people who have acne drops off after 50.
Our senses: For the most part, our senses of touch, smell, and taste are unaffected by our 50’s. Most of us won’t experience dramatic changes in our hearing either. Hearing loss tends to become common in our 60’s. Our vision, however, does tend to decline in our 50’s. We can become more sensitive to glare and dry eye becomes more of a common issue.
Immune system: Good news for allergy suffers, their allergies may become less severe in their 50’s. This is because the immune system becomes less aggressive. However, this does mean that we start becoming more vulnerable to sickness as well.
Happiness: Research shows that from 50 onwards, we typically become happier. A common explanation for this is that humans become better at regulating emotions as we get older. Also, by the time we hit our 50’s, we usually have enough life experience to put bad times in perspective. We also tend to care about what people think of us less.
Turning 50 doesn’t have to get you down. The changes we experience come with positives, too. Also, living a healthy lifestyle can help mitigate some of the less positive changes. Turning 50 let’s us know that it’s time to pay a little more attention to our health.
