Guardian Angels of Home Health, Inc. would like to extend our appreciation to all of the soldiers and their families who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our Freedom. May 30th, 1868 was the first widely observed Memorial Day, though then it was called Decoration Day. It’s first celebration was at Arlington National Cemetery, in honor of the Civil War heroes who sacrificed their lives.
In his speech at this celebration, James A. Garfield said, “We do not know one promise these men made, one pledge they gave, one word they spoke; but we do know they summed up and perfected, by one supreme act, the highest virtues of men and citizens. For love of country they accepted death, and thus resolved all doubts, and made immortal their patriotism and their virtue.”
In 1971, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act and established the last Monday of May as Memorial Day. We salute all those who sacrificed for us and their families.
